Marine macroalgal biodiversity of northern Madagascar: morpho-genetic systematics and implications of anthropic impacts for conservation

چکیده
A floristic survey of the marine algal biodiversity Antsiranana Bay, northern Madagascar, was conducted during November 2018. This represents first inventory encompassing three major macroalgal classes (Phaeophyceae, Florideophyceae and Ulvophyceae) for little-known Malagasy flora. Combining morphological DNA-based approaches, we report from our collection a total 110 species including 30 Phaeophyceae, 50 Ulvophyceae. Barcoding chloroplast-encoded rbcL gene used classes, in addition to tufA study significantly increases knowledge while augmenting reference libraries DNA barcoding. These efforts resulted 72 new records Madagascar. own data with literature, also provide an updated catalogue 442 taxa benthic macroalgae comprising 85 1 Compsopogonophyceae, 240 116 diversity holds 29 (ca. 6.5%) endemic Our results are discussed context increasing threats on Madagascar’s coastal reefs both anthropic anthropogenic activities sewage effluent runoffs unsustainable agricultural practices such as massive deforestation, leading ecosystem shifts dominance reefs, which recommended be addressed through integrated land-sea management Reef-to-Ridge conservation approach.

Biodiversity: the interface between systematics and conservation.
The rapid development of interest inbiodiversity has provided unprecedented opportunities for interactions among disciplines. Although systematic biology and conservation biology have developed largely independently of one another, it is clear now from the burgeoning literature that conservation concerns can motivate systematic studies and that better knowledge of the systematics of organisms c...
متن کاملGlobal Priorities for Marine Biodiversity Conservation
In recent decades, many marine populations have experienced major declines in abundance, but we still know little about where management interventions may help protect the highest levels of marine biodiversity. We used modeled spatial distribution data for nearly 12,500 species to quantify global patterns of species richness and two measures of endemism. By combining these data with spatial inf...
متن کاملImplications of Sponge Biodiversity Patterns for the Management of a Marine Reserve in Northern Australia
Marine reserves are becoming progressively more important as anthropogenic impacts continue to increase, but we have little baseline information for most marine environments. In this study, we focus on the Oceanic Shoals Commonwealth Marine Reserve (CMR) in northern Australia, particularly the carbonate banks and terraces of the Sahul Shelf and Van Diemen Rise which have been designated a Key E...

Household location choices: implications for biodiversity conservation.
Successful conservation efforts require understanding human behaviors that directly affect biodiversity. Choice of household location represents an observable behavior that has direct effects on biodiversity conservation, but no one has examined the sociocultural predictors of this choice relative to its environmental impacts. We conducted a case study of the Teton Valley of Idaho and Wyoming (...
